It’s Open Time!!! Quotes and a Little Rambling

Occasionally I’ll have to post a line that I think is pure magic…A Best In Golf follows for sure.

Lee Trevino won six majors himself…stared down the great players of his era time and time again. I can’t help but admire him for his humility and unabashed admiration for Jack Nicklaus. You can say that it’s not genuine, but that’s your problem , not mine.

Trevino, never at a loss for words, and a guy that today’s golf writers would trade in their MacBooks for, had this to say about golf today and the shot-making (or lack thereof) that resides on the tour today…He did say that the fact today’s players are not shot-makers, but rather bangers with great short games, was not their fault. A Titleist balata…you remember they were about 45 bucks a dozen twenty years ago…would spin, hook, slice, cut, and turn yellow on you after 9 holes or so…today you could theoretically play the same ball (at about $2 each) for the entire Member-Guest and donate it to the junior program until school starts…I have underwear that old but come on!

So when discussing his epic battle with Jack in the playoff at the ’71 Open at Merion , a shotmakers paradise, (which Trevino won 67-71) the Merry Mex had this to say “

“They called me more of a shot-maker than Jack because I didn’t have the high ball. I had to hit more weird shots than he did. Heck, they think Tiger Woods can hit a ball high? Jack could hit a 1-iron so high and it would come down so soft you could catch it in your mouth.”

We love this game don’t we?
