Everything Wrong With Golf In One Guy

A controversy this week with Golf Digest’s latest America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses list reminded me of all the things in the game I’m sorry about.

In a nutshell Donald Trump is accusing the magazine of throwing his course off the list because he won’t advertise. This is of course ridiculous and either a case of runaway ego or just plain publicity seeking bravado…which is his specialty after all…Top 100 material here to be sure.

I don’t mind if he builds 200 story buildings in New York or Thailand, or keeps doing his dumbass TV show…because I don’t have to see it.

What I hate is his assault on golf, it’s traditions and it’s very soul…reputation.

The course he’s upset about is in Florida. Now I’m a multi-club a-hole and admit it…but here is one thing I can promise you…I wouldn’t join a club where guys like him hang out…just wouldn’t

As to his ”public” courses, below is the actual rate policy for The Trump Whatever-it-is GC in Los Angeles.

“Standard Rates Monday to Thursday is $195 per player – includes GPS-equipped golf cart and practice balls. Friday to Sunday & Holidays is $300 per player – includes Trump commemorative gift pouch, GPS-equipped golf cart, and practice balls”

Hey I have an idea…let’s go play Trump’s place this Saturday, spend $400 a man riding around in a cart for 6 hours…we’ll get a GPS and a packet of tees, it’ll be great.

You have at it I’m staying home.

Out of Scotland comes the news of a $2 billion golf resort he’s building north of Aberdeen. I can only hope the locals will have a few jobs to claim out of the monstrosity he’s sure to dump on these good people…thank God I’ll never have to go there.

You see it really doesn’t matter if 10 people or 1,000 read The Best In Golf, I get a kick out of writing about the quirky things that make golf the great game it is…a cheeseburger, a par 4, or a tree are all possible subjects for a post.

But occasionally something makes me cringe. It has nothing to do with my 15 year affiliation with the magazine…it has everything to do with my 45 year affiliation with the game.

Back to the fun next post…the BEGS just left town!
