You may or may not remember but in a recent post I listed Some of the Things I Owe to Golf…among them were family, friends, and career.
I wish I could have written this a couple of weeks ago but I’ve been busy. I just spent the better part of a week with my two boys, Michael (14) and David (11) at Boy Scout Camp in Georgia.
For seven days every summer they get up early and do all the things kids do when they’re not in front of their X Box, reruns, or hanging at the mall…the week is full of camping, canoeing, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, all the things we did when we were growing up…before 500 channels and HDTV.
Back to the things I owe to golf…two of the very best friends in that post were Michael and Elly Scott.
Michael and Elly are the proud and good parents of a son with Fragile X Syndrome and have become the unofficial spokespeople for this condition. Nine -year -old Morgan would have a challenge doing some of the things listed above.
He’s a beautiful and loving kid who needs special care…and he gets it. A recent story in the Atlanta Journal tells a part of their story. Read it here.
They, along with a group of other dedicated parents, have started a research charity called The Fragile X Research Foundation. They are closing in on a treatment for this insipid disease…check it out here.
If you have enjoyed your kids, grandkids, nieces, or nephews this summer make a donation directly to Michael and Elly and they’ll see it gets to the right place.
Or better yet, this October 6th they are throwing a benefit party in Atlanta…call Michael and he’ll fill you in.
Here’s where to find him:

When I picked my boys up yesterday I couldn’t help but feel lucky they were able to have such an old fashioned week at camp but mostly simply home safe and sound.
If you feel the same way, let’s get together in October.
