They Only Missed One…And That’s Pretty Good

Ron Kaspriske has jumped into the B.I.G. deep end with his piece Best 19th Holes in the March issue of Golf Digest

.
Of course a list like this is impossible to put together without an omission or two.
.
Having said that however, you’ll agree there is no more uniquely qualified panelist for this category than the golf scribe…and if there’s free shrimp….you can fuget-a-bot-it. Ron and teams list is as stout as a warm Guinness…several of these I can only dream of seeing someday.
.
Garden City, Pine Valley, Sand Hills…man oh man…we’re talking left you-know-what here.
.
But, and there’s always a but, they did miss one. Ron and squad get a pass though since it just opened a few months ago.

The bar at the new clubhouse at Kiawah’s Ocean Course deserves to be on any roster of best places to tell a lie or settle the trash bet. It’s circular in shape with its many windows looking out on the doubled over 18th flagstick…the Atlantic beyond.

.
There’s a weather vane up on the roof which comes through the ceiling…handy for looking up to see which direction the ever- present -golf -ball -mangling -gale is coming from…while you sit safely inside, protected from the multiple triple bogies which live just a few yards away.
.
The Ocean is one of my favs and has appeared on this BLOG numerous times. The old clubhouse was really a lousy place and just might have been the biggest mismatch of quality of golf and quality of clubhouse in the game…but not anymore.
.
We were there for the second running of The Friendship Cup which in a short time has turned into the best buddy trip in the land.
.
The “Cup” starts off with a past champions dinner (sound familiar?), heads into a day at The Ocean Course with one of your best buds and a caddy, then takes a breather at their 5-star dining room dubbed simply The Ocean Room.
.
Up to your quarters at The Sanctuary and into to a bed softer than a Jack Nicklaus 4-wood used to hit the Par 5s.
.
More on this superb event in the next post but for now I hope you get a chance to not only play this great course, but to hang out in one of the Best Clubhouses In Golf.
